As a designer, you get a lot of competing messages. Sometimes you’ll hear that you can make bank as a designer. Others will say it’s too saturated and competitive. My honest thoughts? Business is hard, but with the right systems, support, and direction, you can thrive.
I get what it’s like to ride the roller coaster of success and failure. To wonder if you can ‘have it all.’ To struggle with feeling ‘good enough’ or ‘ready.’ In my ten years in business, I’ve thrived on $20k months and struggled through being completely broke. I’ve run my business through mental health challenges, divorce, and with young children.
While many programs don’t feel accessible (or don’t account for your reality), I teach from an awareness that you have many roles in life, and you need a business that works for you, not a perfect, idealized version of yourself.
Business may feel hard right now, but it doesn’t have to stay that way forever. Whether you’re a design school grad, self-taught, or somewhere in between doesn’t matter. All that matters is that you have the design skills, perseverance, and guidance to build the business that’s right for you.
